ABOUT
Among an historical and varied neighbouring there is a building which is a mild transition between history and contemporaneity. Five stories contain 10 flats subdivided in 7 different types. The windows are marked with french balconies and, on the ground floor, a passage leads to an internal court where is located the main entrance. Limitations due to maximum height, fire safety and preservation of historical inheritance influenced project choices. The result is an unusual building with roots firmly anchored to the past able to germinates to a unique shape modelled with austere geometric lines respectful for the surrounding environment.
The building is defined by three main volumes distinct by a specific meaning: The first one is a simple geometric element suspended above a passage through the building. On the top floor a special apartment is articulated on two stories and has its own private terraces on the top floor on both facades. The covering with the gambrel roof with dormers is a recollection of an urban sign older more than a century and gives to the project the key that opens to the past.
The second one includes the connection area, the lift and the staircase. This is visible through a long glazed opening that splits the volumes and detect the main entrance. The part that hosts lift and connection area is a simple rational box showing three squared windows and the entrance door. The skin is threated with the same material in use on the roof, aluminium sheets, creating a continuity from the top to the bottom of the building and, contemporarily, able to emphasize the subdivision of the façade in three distinct elements.
The third part is again a simple and pure volume. That time the openings continue to the top floor where is located a distinctive element of the project: the common terrace. This space is covered by a wooden construction with shutters that follows an imaginary grid that sets the main lines for the whole facade. This space is meant to socialization and give the inhabitants the possibility to enjoy the quiet of the protected courtside.
